Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Classes and Support Services
Getting your child GATE-identified in 4th or 5th grade is more important than ever for SFUSD parents. This is because being GATE-identified gets your child into middle school honors classes. In most San Francisco public middle schools, there is a stark contrast between the learning environment in honors classes and the learning environment in mainstream classes.
Our GATE classes provide additional challenges and academic enrichment for strong students. There are lots of very smart kids who for various reasons may not be progressing as hoped in literacy and math. Our multisensory literacy and math programs help such students overcome the core curriculum barriers to getting GATE-identified.
In addition to our classes, we offer GATE-identification support services for our parents. We start by explaining the GATE-identification process used by the SFUSD. Then we review the student's report cards and standardized test results, in order to form a strategy for achieving our goal. For students enrolled in two sessions of GATE classes (18 weeks), we fill out all GATE application forms, making the strongest case possible for GATE-identification, and assist parents and the schools with the submission of documents.
